Migratory User Interfaces
Web Migration Platform
The goal of the Web Migration Platform is to enable migration of Web User Interfaces among different devices.
Migratory user interfaces are able to automatically move among diverse devices, allowing the users to continue in real-time their task after changing the device in use.
Users interacting with a Web application can indeed change device and continue the interaction from the same point where it was left, without having to restart from scratch.
Migration Platform features:
Portability. The Platform is totally Web based, and does not require the installation of specific software. It is thus potentially accessible through any type of browser-enabled device.
Multi-user capability and Social awareness. The Platform is accessible by several users at the same time, who can signal their presence and can be aware of other users (depending on their privacy preferences).
Security support. SSL is automatically managed for pages under HTTPS protocol (and can be manually enabled even for pages that do not originally exploit it).
Main Web Migration options:
Total vs. Partial. With Total Migration the whole Web page is migrated, while Partial Migration involves only one or more parts of the page. The latter is particularly useful when switching between a PC/laptop and a small device, as the user can select only those components that well fit the small screen of the target device.
Push vs. Pull. Migration can be pushed towards a target device or migration pulled from another device. In the former situation, the initiating device is the one that hosts the interface; in the latter case, the initiating device is the one that will act as target (i.e. will host the interface).
Single- vs. Multi-device. Single target migration typically occurs between two personal devices, while multiple target migration may be triggered from a personal device towards the devices of other people (e.g., friends or colleagues) in order to quickly share a Web interface.
