Delle Grazie's Church

chiesa delle Grazie

Started in 1623 under Charles I Cybo Malaspina and consecrated in 1676, the church is situated near the gate of Lugnola. Its neoclassic marble façade contains a mosaic of Saint Francis and Saint Anthony with the quarries as background. A small flight of stairs leads to the modern bronze portal made up of six panels narrating Christ's life.

It's an aisleless church with barrel vault; above the entrance, there is the semicircular neoclassic orchestra of white Ravaccione marble. The 18th century high altar by Bergamini consists of four red French marble pillars surmounted by a polished white marble high relief representing clouds held up by angels and an altarpiece formed by a four Corinthian column tabernacle; in the center of the tabernacle, there is a Tuscan Renaissance fresco of the Madonna delle Grazie. The tympanum is held by four red French marble pillars with marble angels on top. Two white marble veneered daises bear black scroll ornaments with the inscriptions "AVE MARIA" on one side and "GRAZIA PLENA" (full of grace) on the other. Two large paintings of the Annunciation and the Flight into Egypt (1830) by Melani are above the two white marble confessionals veneered with yellow Siena marble, brocatello and ancient green marble. Between the confessionals, there are the two minor altars in Baroque style dedicated to the saints Francis and Anthony.
