S. Maria's Church

chiesa santa maria della lacrime

Situated in Via Carriona opposite the bridge with the same name and the Fontana della Sirena (The Fountain of the Mermaid), the church dates back to the middle of the 17th century. It's surrounded by the aristocratic buildings of the Counts Del Medico and Schizzi. With its façade and colonnade, it's the most beautiful of the churches of this period. The central entrance with open arcade is protected by a railing of the 19th century against the wagon traffic of marble loads from the quarries along Via Carriona to the port. The bell tower has an irregular triangular section.

The church has no aisles and the Dorian pillars of the walls bear the cornice with the vault. The rich marble interior contains an apse façade with the high altar and two minor ones built with white and polychrome inlaid marble. On the left hand side above the vestry there is the pulpit. The church is at present undergoing restoration work and it can be visited only with prior permission of the parish priest of San Giacomo.
