UiO is a Scandinavian powerhouse for research and development in some of the fastest growing areas of the world economy - including informatics and its applications in other fields. UiO has 20 specialist Centres. Some of these are located in Oslo Research Park adjacent to its main campus. Here new knowledge-based companies have created 1,500 new jobs in the last decade; many of them in the new Internet industry. The latest extension to the Research Park is a building housing research groups on media studies, information systems, and ICT and learning. InterMedia is one of the centres in the new building. InterMedia aspires to be “an initiator of activities at the university itself, as well as outwards towards society and business life.” The researchers at InterMedia work with educational, social, technical, cultural, ethical and legal aspects of the changes caused by digitalisation and the convergence of computer, telecommunications and media technologies, with an emphasis on the research fields where these aspects meet. An interdisciplinary research group on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) works on the borders of ICT (new media and communication technologies) and education. The CSCL-group consist of associate professors Annita Fjuk, Sten Ludvigsen, and Anders Mørch. They have links at UiO to Faculty of Education and Department of Informatics. InterMedia has close collaboration with its sister institution at the University of Bergen (InterMedia, UiB), and selected universities in Denmark, Finland and Sweden. InterMedia collaborates with industrial partners, including Norwegian Telecom (Telenor R&D).
